An inversion is the same chord with a different note on the bottom. Same notes, rearranged -- slightly different colour.
Root Position
C4 - E4 - G4
1st Inversion
E4 - G4 - C5
2nd Inversion
G4 - C5 - E5
Notice the subtle difference in feel -- same chord, different voicing.
