Between some natural notes, there are notes called sharps (♯) and flats (♭). On a piano, these are the black keys.
Black keys highlighted — click to hear:
Sharp (♯) means one semitone higher. C♯ is one key up from C.
Flat (♭) means one semitone lower. D♭ is one key down from D — the same key as C♯!
That's right — every black key has two names. C♯ = D♭. They call these enharmonic equivalents.
